Steps from Temporary Permit to Full License
Before you can get an Ohio temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC), you must pass the 40 question multiple-choice test with at least a 75%. Before you attempt the test at the Ohio BMV, use these resources to study Ohio’s road rules and road signs.
You can go to any Ohio BMV locations near you to complete the Ohio driver’s knowledge exam and vision test. Before you are tested, you will need to provide proof of your full legal name, date of birth and social security number.
Before you can receive a Ohio temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC), you must pass the 40 question multiple-choice test with at least a 75%. You can purchase your TIPIC within 60 days of passing the test. You will need to provide your proof of name, date of birth and social security number at this time. In the event that you don’t pass the knowledge exam, you will need to wait 24 hours before you attempt it again.
Once you have received your Ohio temporary permit, you can practice driving as long as you are accompanied by a licensed driver 21 years or older.
When you’re comfortable and confident behind the wheel, you can schedule your Ohio BMV road test. You will need to provide your own car to use for the test. Before you can take the test, you must already hold an Ohio TIPIC. If you are under 18, you will need to also provide a driver education certificate.

The Ohio road test has 2 parts: driving and maneuverability.
The Ohio driving test portion will cover stopping, starting, turning, backing up, performing turns, using turn signals, driving in the proper lane and maintaining a safe following distance around other cars.
The maneuverability test portion will have you move forward and backwards through markers.
After passing both portions of the road test, you will need to surrender your Ohio TIPIC before you can be issued a drivers license.
Effective July 1, 2017, adults age 18 years and older who fail their maneuverability and/or driving test will be required to complete an Abbreviated Adult Training Program prior to being able to receive a license. If you need to complete adult driver training, you must use a provider that has been approved by the State of Ohio to offer the course.
